Conservative MP advocates jailing journalists
For those suggesting the Conservatives have rid the party of all the nutbars, check this out. It looks like the Conservatives still have their fair share of nutbars. While this was an off the cuff remark, it should be noted that Colin Mayes is one of the original Reformers. This also reveals their general contempt for the Charter, Freedom of the Press, and the media as a whole. I am for one sick and tired of those on both the left and right claiming they cannot advance their policies because of the media. The media's job is to report and yes they are biased, but from all sides. We have the CBC and Toronto Star on the left, Globe and Mail and CTV in the centre, while the National Post and Sun Media on the right, so if you read from a wide variety of sources as I do, you can get all viewpoints. Hopefully these nutbars have little influence, although considering Stephen Harper was once a Reformer himself, I am still skeptical.
Mr. Harper, this is your chance to prove me wrong that you aren't an extremist. Make clear you don't support these ridiculous statements.

He who censors submissions to this blog is in no position to claim moral authority to tll Stephen Harper what or what he shouldn't do about some nutbar.
Grab a mirror!
"This also reveals their general contempt for the Charter, Freedom of the Press, and the media as a whole."
You're making unfair generalizations again.
By that standard, all Liberals think Americans are "bastards," that Conservatives are Klansmen, and crosses are still burning on lawns "as we speak."
Oh, and lets not forget the Liberal MP who told an elderly WWII veteran to get the hell out of the country and go to the US, or the Liberal MP who refused to help another elderly, blind veteran because he didn't vote for him.
And yes, of course, that ad that implied that Canadian troops would terrorize their fellow citizens "in our cities." And that ad was approved by the party leader himself.
I guess that means the bulk of Liberals are a bunch of rabid-left, anti-rural, anti-American xenophobes who hate veterans and despise soldiers.
If the standard is to make generalizations everytime someone sticks their foot in their mouth, there are plenty of unflattering generalizations to make about Liberals.
I mean, do you honestly believe that most Conservatives want to jail the media?
I know you're more than intelligent enough to know better than that.
I love how you are trying to paint the Conservatives as a bunch of extremists with the statement of one MP, stating that one MP represents the whole party. Yet, doing such a thing when portraying the Liberals as corrupt was absolutely forbidden.
Hypocrisy. A dish best served Liberal.
Miles,
Remember how Mulroney tried the same tact in 1984. It lasted about three months.
Harper has a choice to make. He can reverse this dimwhit of a policy on cabinet accessibility or he can let it fester into a real wound that will infect his government.
If the Parliament Press Gallery is deemed "Enemy Number One", they will quite literally move heaven and earth to undermine his government. The Prime Minister needs a real dose of political reality or he will quickly pay a severe price for his conduct.
Anonymous, for whatever reason this blog wasn't publishing the posts, but I've corrected this.
Brandon - I am not suggesting all Conservatives do share those views, far from it. However, just as you have with the Liberals, when a Conservative says and does something stupid, I will point it out. This was a stupid statement. As for the statements you made, I don't agree with any of those Liberal statements, but I am a Liberal partisan so I will point out the Tory mistakes while I have no doubt the Tories (as they should) will point out all the Liberal missteps.
BC Tory - I didn't say the whole Conservative Party supported this type of thinking. I simply pointed out that this type of thinking still exists within the party. I know Colin Mayes is one of the more right wing MPs, but I still think I have the right to point out some of the more extreme MPs. Hopefully the party will distance itself from them.
PST - Stephen Harper's contempt for the media is definitely not good. I know he thinks they have a liberal bias, but when you consider more papers endorsed the Conservatives than Liberals, I don't buy that argument. Besides, even though he has the right to keep cabinet meetings secret, it is bad politics and except in the case of a national emergency or for security reasons, there is no reason to keep them secret.
