Conservative Attack Ads and War Rooms
The Conservatives already have their war room set up and are spending much of their donations preparing for an election, which leads me to one conclusion, the party obviously wants one. As much as I would like to see Harper turfed, we've had two elections in three years, so many of us are electioned out for now. While the party certainly has every right to spend their donations on whatever they would like, I do hope the party focuses more on governing than electioneering. I agree with the Liberals plan to support the senate bill creating fixed election dates as we have in BC and Ontario. This would not mean we couldn't have a sooner election if the government fell on a non-confidence motion, it simply means the PM cannot call one for opportunistic reasons.
The second ad was in Newfoundland & Labrador against Danny Williams' claims the Tories broke their promise. While I tend to side with Williams, I think every party has the right to explain their policies so I have no problem with these although they should focus on stating the facts rather than personal smears. My only concern here is this might just escalate the confrontation. While it is true Williams is certainly more than willing to pick a fight with the federal government, trying to egg him on is not a good idea. More than anything a PM should be about uniting Canadians from all province, not pitting one against another, which I fear this could do. I understand Williams anger at the federal Tories, but maybe he should tone it down a bit. Otherwise be forceful like Rodney Macdonald is and make clear their dissatisfaction, but don't go so far that that the relation is so poisoned a deal is not possible. In addition Williams does not have the power to defeat Stephen Harper, so while I hope Harper is defeated in the next election, it would be foolish for any premier to base their policy on a certain party being in power since elections are unpredictable and we have no way of knowing who will win or what type of government they will form. There is also some merit to keeping your fights behind closed doors as Gordon Campbell does. Looking at his positions and those taken by the current and previous governments, I am sure he has had his disagreements with them, but he always does is quietly and it seems to have paid off. In fact all the attention BC has gotten can largely be attributed to Gordon Campbell's ability to work well with leaders from both parties.

Apparently the NDP have had a full time lease on their war room for quite some time but they did not advertise this - kept it secret.
Does anybody know where this is?
They are also running tv ads. So, it could be that Jack is itching for an election.
Especially with Elizabeth May looking more and more like she is planning to do deals with the Liberals to NOT run in key Liberal ridings (why not just merge - Greenies must feel a little jilted methinks by their own turncoat leader)
So Jack would quickly pick up seats on the left and the far left and the loony left AND the Liberal left if an election was called this spring.
The NDP may be spending on ads and have a war room, but their budget isn't that great. The difference is unlike the Liberals and Tories, they only target around 50 ridings that they see as winneable, whereas the Tories and Liberals target far more.
here in BC, we've had like five elections in 2 years. In a way, I hope whoever wins the next Federal election, hopefully the Liberals :), wins a majority government so we can have a bit of a rest on elections and all the unwanted chaos tat comes with them, particularly all the flyers, attack ads and just generally annoying door knockers and unwanted phone calls.
I actually find myself agreeing with Jack Layton for a change. The Conservatives should stop playing games and saying they don't want an election when it's so obvious they do want one.
Opionater777 - A Liberal majority would be nice, but I cannot see it happening unless the Tories last until 2009. The Tories simply haven't been in power long enough to have a big enough screw up to turn a large number of people over to the Liberals. My hope is the Liberals win a minority, do a good job and get a majority the following election.
Besides minority government don't have to be unproductive. They only don't work here since we aren't use to them and each party is more interested in the case of the opposition getting into power and in the case of the government getting a majority. If minorities were the norm, they would be quite stable as they are in Germany where parties have learned to cooperate and work together.
Best thing to happen to the Liberals:

Too bad really.
Conservatives were looking forward to her staying on and wrecking the Liberals from within as she tried with the Conservatives.
I don't think Belinda Stronach was a huge liability to the party. Sure the Conservative hardliners hated her, but I suspect they were angry she joined the Conservatives in the first place since she was too moderate from them. I've talked to enough Reformers and found they have little tolerance for those who don't share their extreme right wing views whereas the Progressive Conservative wing was tolerant of those both to the right and left of them.
I find it ironic that the biggest Belinda haters seem to love people like Cheryl Gallant, Myron Thompson, Jason Kenney, and Rob Anders who are too right wing for even most right-leaning Canadians. Individuals like this and their dominance in the party is why I left and eventually joined the Liberals. Despite being to the right of 90% of Liberals, I feel there is a greater tolerance amongst centrist for those with different viewpoints than amonst ideologues.
While Harper has done a decent job of keeping the right wing wackos under control, I wonder why they are staying on and many are seeking nominations. If they didn't believe Harper would take a hard turn to the right, they wouldn't be interested in running under the Tory banner. If he, God forbid, gets a majority, I sincerely hope my predictions are wrong, but the risk is too great to take that chance.
