Liberal Attack Ads

The first attack ads have come out so this just might be enough to turn the campaign around. While it is unfortunate that we have to go to attack ads, I believe this is the only way to stop a Conservative victory. For those saying it is propaganda, unlike last time these are actual quotes from Harper. What effect will have? Its difficult to say but I suspect it will scare of some soft Tories, but I am not sure whether it will be enough to turn it around since the Liberals seem to be quite a ways behind. I think they should have launched them a week ago when they were tied to halt the momentum in its footsteps. We'll just have to say, but I hope it works.

I'll have more on the debates later.

Great ads, especially that one with the Canadian troops invading our own cities.

Paul Martin last night: "enough," "I want this debate on a higher plane," "people don't want mud slinging.

Paul Martin today...same old, same old.

Have you checked some of the other blogs, CTV for exampl? 5 or 6 to 1 totally disgusted, will absolutely NOT vote Fiberal.

Another fiberal attack ad shows Gilles Duceppe and Stephen Harper talking and suggests there is something ominous about that.

The picture was taken at a Holocast memorial.

Nice bunch of thugs you run with Miles.

These ads run the gamut from deceptive, to deceitful, to outright disguting.

This could well signal the end of Paul Martin's political career.

Certainly the career of John Duffy, who Mike Duffy on live television said John was trying to "intimidate" him, after them getting into a shouting match about how disgusting the ad was.

Yup, Miles, this will turn it around alright,

From slight CPC majority to CPC landslide.

I don't know what will happen, they could work or they could backfire, will just have to say. Even Warren Kinsella who wants Harper to win thinks they will be effective at helping the Liberals, although he didn't say it would be enough to prevent a Tory win as their lead is around 10 points. I just hope that if Harper gets in, he sticks to his platform and drops any idea of implementing a hidden agenda.

Liberal values:

Cheat, lie about cheating and, when that doesn't work, employ attack ads that lie about someone else in the hopes people momentarily forget that you're a cheat!

Well I agree that it will make some prospective Conservatives go Liberal, I do believe that for every one that does, about 4 or 5 prospective Liberal voters will go Conservative. These ads are just that lowbrow and disgusting.

For example, one says, and I quote "Harper admitted the only way to pay for his promises was to raie taxes or go into deficit." This is true....if by HARPER you mean MARTIN. Harper has said no such thing. Another saying Harper leadership campaign was aided by American right-wingers was ludicrous. The ad that stated Harper and Duceppe held secret meetings and work as a coalition if elected was also disgusting.

But, the winner (or, I guess, loser) would go to the one that was pulled: the army one. By far, that was the most disgusting, brutal ad one could conjure. It makes the Chretien paralysis ad look like an episode of "Care Bears".

I have often compared this Liberal campaign to that of Kim Campbell's camapign. So, I think I've now found the martin equivalent to the Chretien paralyis ad.

In the end, this will backfire most likely.

It might backfire, but we won't know for sure until January 23rd. Iv've heard on CBC that if the Liberals don't re-bound by the end of next week, they will likely accept defeat and ask people to send more Liberals to keep the Tories to a minority government.

Interesting. Do you mean the Thursday-Friday before voting day? Because that doesn't leave a lot of time to switch gears for a Monday election. OTOH, they can't exactly concede much sooner than that, can they?

OT a bit, Miles, but I have to ask what you personally think of (a) the "troops on the streets" ad that got yanked, and (b) the set-to between the Duffies (tm.) during the post-debate wrap-up. If you don't know what I mean, check this out (click on VIDEO).

Not exactly the sort of coverage the Board was looking for, I'd wager ...

Jason Hickman - I would say they will concede defeat unless they have some tape with some controversial comment by some Conservative candidate and then they will release it days before the election hoping it causes a major drop in Tory support. Also it depends on what the lead is, if they can narrow if to five points, then they will keep going right up to election day.

Here's a link to the army spot and Mike Duffy vs. Fiberal apologist John Duffy, with Mike refusing to allow the Fiberal's attempt to stifle free expression:

The ad is disgusting enough, but the Liberal's refusal to apologze should tell you even more about their "values," which they claim to exclusively share Canadians.

Proud of them are you?

Liberal candidates. Hurling racial insults. In our cities. Here in Canada. I am not making this up:

OTTAWA — Andrew Telegdi, Liberal Member of Parliament and Liberal candidate for the riding of Kitchener-Waterloo, defended his use of the term 'nigger" at an all-candidates meeting held on Wednesday.

The Facts:

· As President of the Federation of Students at the University of Waterloo, Mr. Telegdi said students did not vote in a municipal election because, 'they want to be niggers" (The Chevron, December 6, 1974).

· When asked about the incident at an all-candidates' meeting two days ago, Mr. Telegdi defended the comments and refused to apologize (The Record, January 12, 2006).

· Mr. Telegdi served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister from January 30th, 2004 to July 19th, 2004. Mr. Martin offered to reappoint Telegdi as a Parliamentary Secretary (The Record, July 23, 2004).

Mr. Telegdi continues to be the Liberal candidate in Kitchener-Waterloo with the full blessing and support of Paul Martin and the Liberal Party of Canada.

anonymous - I am no fan of Andrew Telegdi. Even long time Liberal war room veteran Warren Kinsella has donated to his opponents since he wants him defeated. Although he does have one thing in common with Southwestern Ontario Liberal MPs, they seem to have a lot of maverick ones from this region: Paul Steckle, Roger Gallaway, Rose-Marie Ur (retiring), Pat O'Brien (also retiring and quit the Liberal party), Brenda Chamberlain
