Joe Volpe enters the Liberal leadership race

I am pleased to see that Joe Volpe has thrown his hat into the ring. Unlike Calgary Grit, BC Tory, or Brandon, I think Joe Volpe could be a very good leader. While I haven't seen his specific policies so I reserve my judgement for that, I so far like what I've seen. Now I realize many of the accusations such as the expensive pizzas and limos and the Klansman comment could be a liability against him next election. Therefore he probably wouldn't be my first choice, but were he to win, I would still vote for him over Harper. I don't think the flip flop on SSM will be an issue since if the Tories bring that up, that will only hurt them as Canadians want the issue dropped. Still on the whole I think he would be a very good leader and good PM, but I think his chances of winning are pretty low and of becoming PM are even lower.

It might happen. I hope you are wrong as I personally believe Joe Volpe would be a far better PM than Harper. You can at least be assured us latte sipping Liberals in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal won't be coming over to the Cons even if Joe Volpe wins.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Wish I could put it more respectably, but that guy is a clown. If you want to shed the Liberal image of partisanship and culture of entitlement, Volpe is the WRONG way to go.

He may win Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal- but seeing as the Tories have nothing there, it makes no difference really.

BC Tory - I can tell you right now, I will not be supporting Joe Volpe on the first ballot. But should he become Liberal leader I will still vote for him, pound Liberal signs into the ground, and knock on doors for Liberal candidates.

As for Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, it is unfortunate the rest of Canada has moved away from them, but hopefully over time we can convince the ROC that we are the ideal cities with the type of values that will make Canada great and the envy of the world.

Kind of an arrogant attitude, no? Essentially you're saying when it comes to envy of the world, places like Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City, St. John's, etc. don't mean jack squat and don't possess ideal values.

Of course, you're trying to imply ideal values are Liberal values, which do not apply to the aforementioned cities, seeing as the Liberals got completely shut out of all of those cities.

Never mind that Calgary and Edmonton are vibrant, cosmopolitan cities than are nice, clean and full of hard-working, industrious people. Those, in my opinion, are ideal values.

Not that the big three fail to possess such a thing, they most certainly do. But, ideal values have nothing to do with Liberal or Conservative. The ideal values of courtesty, efficiency and industry is vibrant in the three Liberal strongholds, but also in Tory locks like Calgary and Edmonton. Ideal cities with defining Canadian values are identifiable in any major city here (and not just the major cities, mind you), not just the Liberal ones.

People admire Canadians for the values I outlined, not because they elect Liberals. Maybe Michael Moore admires us for the latter, but most admire us for the former.

And remember, this is coming from someone who was born and raised, and in fact lived all but 10 months of his life in Toronto.

No, Calgary and Edmonton indeed have some very good aspects. Certainly the strong enterprising and can do attitude from Calgary is definitely a good thing.

But I do believe that when it comes to international politics, Vancouver and Toronto are the most outward looking with the greatest international perspective. Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Edmonton are somewhere in between, while St. John's I've heard is a great city, but they are pretty ethnically homogenous and a high number have never been off the rock. Likewise Quebec City is pretty ethnically homogenous too and many have never been outside of Quebec.

That being said, I agree with Bono and Kofi Annan that the World needs more of Canada. And I believe the Liberal vision of Canada is not just a vision for Canada, it is a vision for the World that all countries should strive towards.

Oh I get it. People ouside of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are nice enough for you. It's just that they're a little, well, inbred, as you put it.

Nice. Typical Liberal racism hard at work.

No its not racism. I simply disagree with the choice those cities made. Now lets remember there are non-liberals in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, just as there are liberals in pretty much every location of Canada, although they are a rarity in some areas, but they still got at least one vote in pretty much every polling station in Canada.

I simply pointing out that I see the values of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal as ideal for Canada as a whole and the World.

Again, you are mixing up Liberal values and Canadian values. I just said, it wasn't Liberal ideals that make people respect Canada so much. People, regardless of political stripe, are courteous, industrious, efficient. Doesn't matter where they are from or who they vote for.

Off course people respect the values Canada stands for. But lets remember liberalism and much of what Canada stands for are quite similiar. And when I say liberalism, I mean the philosophy not the party. liberalism is the belief in individual freedom, tolerance, minority rights, peace, prosperity, and economic competiveness. Those are values that some Conservatives also hold too and even some NDP supporters.

Now THAT makes more sense...from the way you typed it, it seemed you were talking about big-L liberalism. I would say that Canada is a place that follows the values of classical liberalism (something emobided by the Liberals, Conservatives and even the NDP in some cases).

If Volpe is elected Liberal leader, he will sweep every polling station on the moon. Enough said.

I would say Canada is a blend of both classical liberalism and big L liberalism taking the best of both. We believe in hard work and enterprise and individual freedom, while at the same time social justice, equality and tolerance.
